My 8 month old son is on 3 solid meals a day and up until 4 days ago, between 4 and 6 breastfeeds in 24 hours. About 2 weeks ago he started the odd bite, I would (surprisingly) quite calmly say "no biting" but he would still get upset, however we continued breastfeeding. Then all of a sudden, he started latching on for one second but scraping off with his teeth. Even though I learnt to expect it and not react he would still get a little upset and not even commence a feed. It has been 4 days now with no booby. The first day by the afternoon and no BF's I expressed a bottle which he had at bedtime and he BF'd through the night (approx 4 times!). The second day was the same however i offered water as I was concerned he was getting dehydrated. The third and fourth day (today) he has EBM morning and night as I want to keep up my supply however has also been having bottles of formula. Last night he only BF'd once throughout the night...perhaps he was more full from the formula feed? I rang the ABA who advised that because he is still feeding throughout the night it is most likely a nursing strike as babies also very rarely wean themselves before 12 months when you have had a successful BFing relationship previously. I'm not ready to give up breastfeeding just yet and will continue to express just in case he comes back but I would really like to know other mum's experiences with nursing strikes. How long did they last? How did you coax bub back on? Did you supplement with formula or just offer water to keep bub hydrated throughout the day? I do believe DS is still teething. Has 8 already with the eye teeth being next...which I've heard are the most painful ones? Any help is appreciated, I'm feeling very emotional about this and burst into tears everytime I see DH giving the bottle of formula, something I'll have to do tomorrow when he goes back to work. Oh, and for the record, we co-sleep.
